The history of the city of Zbarazh began on the Starozbarazh mountain, where a medieval castle existed for two centuries. In 1589, the Tatars destroyed the castle and the Zbarazh princes decided not to restore it, but to move to a new settlement that grew nearby. The first mention of modern Zbarazh as a city dates back to 1583.
